Our Chiropractors
Dr. Kim NguyenDr. Kim is a native Kingstonian. When he wasn't in class at Sydenham PS or KCVI, he would often be found wandering downtown or working at his parent's store, the Asian Market. He went on to graduate from University of Guelph where he completed his B.Sc. (Hons) in Kinesiology. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Kim moved to Auckland to study at New Zealand College of Chiropractic. He has since spent the past 5 years working as a Chiropractor in Singapore before deciding to complete the Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board (CCEB) exams and starting a practice with Dr. Devika.
Q: Why did you become a Chiropractor?
A: From a young age I knew I wanted to work in health care. When I was a kid my mom had a nasty fall and was prescribed pain meds for her back pain. They helped reduce the pain but also caused headaches and other side-effect symptoms. While she was still recovering, I happened to accompany a friend of mine to go see his Chiropractor which is where I learned about the idea of treating the cause and not the symptom. To maintain our health we need to be active about our health choices and not just waiting for things to go wrong before we do something about it. It's much easier to maintain than it is to restore or rebuild! That really resonated with me which is why I decided to become a Chiropractor. Q: What's the best part of your job? A: Hmm, of course helping people get well after they had been suffering is quite rewarding. But I'd have to say the best part is seeing patients have an "aha!" moment. Maybe their moment had to do with noticing and correcting poor work posture, or realizing that the occasional soreness after regular exercise is far better than being injured due to their body being too weak. Whatever the aha moment, it always involves a realization that health care is pro active and that it is NOT normal to always have pain or discomfort. Q: How do you spend free time? A: I like to be active, especially in the winter when I seem to need a bit of extra motivation to get outdoors and to get my body moving. I definitely enjoy some gaming of both the video and board varieties. I love to travel but hate planning the trips. I wouldn't say I'm an amateur photographer, but I invested in a decent camera and I like to snap photos (some of which you can see in our website backgrounds). Oh, and I love good food! |

Q: Why did you become a Chiropractor?
A: While I was growing up if I ever had any headaches, indigestion, trouble sleeping - basically any symptoms, then there was medicine that could help. Fast forward to my first year of Undergrad studying Biomed, a close family friend, retired surgeon and mentor of mine, enlightened me with a simple fact that we all seem to lose sight of: "Healthy people don't need medicine". Since that resonated with me, my mentor suggested I look into studying Chiropractic. I ended up attending New Zealand College of Chiropractic where my mentor had been a department head and lectured the pathology course since his retirement from being a surgeon. Q: Why did you decide to start a practice in Kingston? A: My husband, Dr. Kim Nguyen, is originally from Kingston. We met while studying in my hometown of Auckland, NZ and after working in Singapore we decided to relocate to Kingston so I could experience life in Canada and in his hometown. I really love the sense of community here, the old architecture, all the local events and the vibrant downtown! I actually had only seen snow falling from the sky when skiing on mountains in New Zealand, but I had never seen it coming down and blanketing a city or freezing a lake like it does here so that's still a fun novelty for me! Q: What interests do you have outside of Chiropractic? A: My next biggest passion would have to be travel! We managed to travel all over SE Asia and the Pacific while working in Singapore. And more recently we travelled through South America on our way up to Canada. I love experiencing different cultures and cuisine! Seeing the Northern Lights is tops on my travel bucket list! |
